Yu Darvish clarifies retirement rumors and keeps future with San Diego Padres in limbo

The future of Yu Darvish in Major League Baseball was once again at the center of the conversation following a report by journalist Kevin Acee of the San Diego Union-Tribune, which suggested a possible retirement of the Japanese pitcher. The information generated a quick reaction from his entourage, as Joel Wolf, the player’s agent, denied that there is a definitive decision regarding the end of his professional career.

Darvish, one of the most important figures for the San Diego Padres, is currently recovering from UCL surgery at the end of the season. This procedure, commonly associated with Tommy John surgery, has cast doubt on his future in professional baseball.

Yu Darvish breaks silence and clarifies his position on social media

Given the magnitude of the rumor, Yu Darvish himself decided to speak out publicly through his social networks. The 39-year-old pitcher made direct reference to the original report and clarified that, while he is contemplating the possibility of terminating his contract, he still has pending conversations with the California franchise.

“You may have seen an article, and while I am inclined to terminate the contract, there is still much to discuss with the Padres, so the finer details are still to be decided,” Darvish wrote on X (formerly Twitter). He was also clear that he will not announce his retirement at this time.

The Japanese pitcher added that his absolute priority is the rehabilitation of his elbow, and that he will only evaluate his continuity once he determines whether he can pitch competitively again. “If I get to the point where I can pitch again, I’ll start from scratch to compete. If I feel I can’t do it, I’ll announce my retirement,” he explained.

The future of Yu Darvish with the Padres remains uncertain

The uncertainty over Darvish’s availability for the 2026 season continues, especially as the injury would keep him out for a long period. The pitcher himself acknowledged that his future is unclear and that he has seriously considered the possibility of not returning to the mound.

“I seriously considered not coming back, because of the injury and because my performance in recent years was not up to par,” Darvish said.

Throughout his career, the veteran pitcher has dealt with various injuries, which adds complexity to the decision. For now, both the San Diego Padres and the player himself are taking a cautious approach, focusing more on recovery than definitive announcements.

Darvish’s final decision has yet to be made

While continuing his rehabilitation, Yu Darvish avoids setting deadlines and keeps the possibility of returning to competition open. For the moment, his retirement is not official and his future in professional baseball remains up in the air, waiting to see how his body responds in the coming months.
