“You’re talking to a Sanders, baby!” – Coach Prime and son Shedeur send defiant message to the doubters

The moment said as much about mindset as it did about momentum. When Shedeur Sanders stepped in front of reporters after practice this week, he didn’t dwell on where his NFL journey began.

Instead, he focused on where it might be going, delivering a message that echoed far beyond the practice field.

“Now I feel bulletproof,” the Cleveland Browns quarterback said, a pointed reflection on the adversity that shaped his rookie season. It was a statement rooted in experience, but amplified almost instantly by his father.

Deion Sanders, never far from the spotlight when it comes to defending his son, responded on social media with a familiar tone of pride and defiance: “That’s a Sanders you’re talking to baby.”

For a player whose path to the NFL didn’t follow the script many expected, the confidence feels deliberate.

Less than a year ago, Sanders was one of the most talked-about prospects in college football. After starring at Colorado and Jackson State, he entered the 2025 NFL Draft with first-round buzz.

What followed was one of the more surprising slides in recent memory, as teams passed on him repeatedly before Cleveland selected him with the 144th overall pick.

The night brought its own controversy. Sanders was the target of a prank call during the draft, an incident later linked to the son of an Atlanta Falcons coach and one that prompted league intervention and fines.

On the field, his transition proved equally challenging. Sanders completed 56.6 percent of his passes for 1,400 yards, throwing seven touchdowns against 10 interceptions while spending much of the season navigating a crowded quarterback room. His opportunities came late, and consistency remained elusive.

Yet those setbacks appear to have reshaped rather than shaken him. “I don’t let nobody else dictate how I feel about myself,” Sanders said. “If I allow that, then I’m not mentally strong.”

New leadership, new energy and fresh opportunity

The Browns‘ offseason overhaul has created a different environment. With Todd Monken replacing Kevin Stefanski as head coach, Sanders has embraced what he describes as a shift in both tone and approach.

“A lot of new energy… I’m loving what we’re doing,” he said. “Coach just spoke life into me.”

That belief is already translating into opportunity. Sanders took first-team reps at the start of voluntary workouts, sharing snaps with Deshaun Watson while competing with rookie Dillon Gabriel.

Monken has been clear that no position is locked in, framing the quarterback situation as an open competition rather than a defined hierarchy.

For Sanders, the difference lies in communication as much as opportunity. Reflecting on his development, he pointed to a more collaborative coaching style.

“You could say somebody doesn’t know how to learn… but does he not know how to learn, or do I not know how to communicate?” he said, crediting the staff for creating a more supportive environment.

Confidence backed by family and perspective

If there is a constant in Sanders‘ journey, it is the presence of his father. Deion Sanders‘ public support has long been part of the narrative, and this moment was no different.

By amplifying his son’s words, he reinforced a message that has become central to Shedeur‘s identity: resilience paired with belief.

That perspective is now shaping how the younger Sanders approaches Year 2. “I’m thankful that everything happened how it happened,” he said. “I’m just grateful overall.”

There is still work to be done. Cleveland is coming off a 5-12 season, and the quarterback battle remains unresolved. But for Sanders, the conversation is no longer about draft position or early struggles.

It is about what comes next. And if his words, and his father’s response, are any indication, he intends to make sure people remember exactly who they are talking about.
