Yasiel Puig‘s name is back in the news, but this time not for his sporting performance or his opinions about the sport, but for the accusations against him. He was recently found guilty in a federal trial related to illegal sports betting. A federal jury found him guilty of obstruction of justice and making false statements in connection with an investigation into illegal sports betting operating in the United States.

The case, which lasted almost two weeks in a Los Angeles court, revealed unexpected details as, according to court documents, Puig placed 899 sports bets between July and September 2019, accumulating a debt of nearly $283,000, all through a network run by former minor league pitcher Wayne Nix.

Authorities Accuse Yasiel Puig of False Statements

Prosecutors argue that Puig lied during an interview with federal investigators in January 2022, when he denied knowing about the illegal gambling business. They also noted that the former player concealed this information during his naturalization process in 2019, stating under oath that he had never engaged in illegal gambling.

These actions led to two formal charges: false statements, with a possible penalty of up to five years in prison, and obstruction of justice, which could mean up to 10 additional years. Sentencing will take place on May 26, a key date that will mark the future of the former Dodger.

The case against Puig is part of a broader investigation launched in 2017 against Wayne Nix, who has already pleaded guilty to conspiracy to operate an illegal gambling business, as well as tax evasion and money laundering. During the process, authorities detected the involvement of several high-profile gamblers, including the former MLB player. Although it was never proven that Puig bet on baseball games, the volume of bets and the debt generated raised alarm bells at the Department of Justice.

Yasiel Puig is a Cuban professional baseball player who has played in Major League Baseball (MLB) for the Los Angeles Dodgers, Cincinnati Reds and Cleveland Indians. He is currently a free agent

Yasiel Puig was born on December 7, 1990, in Cienfuegos, Cuba, and made his MLB debut in 2013 with the Los Angeles Dodgers. He quickly became one of the most electrifying figures in the league, earning the nickname “El Caballo Loco” for his aggressive and emotional style. He was an All-Star in 2014 and left memorable moments in Los Angeles before moving on to Cincinnati and Cleveland in 2019.

After leaving Major League Baseball, he continued his career in international leagues such as South Korea, Mexico, Dominican Republic and Venezuela.
