Yankees make their first signing in the offseason and the decision divides the fans

The New York Yankees have already made their first official move of the MLB offseason, but far from causing excitement, the decision has sparked debate among their fans with messages in which they seem to show that the prevailing emotion is disappointment.

Amed Rosario signed a one-year, $2.5 million deal, including incentives, a move that marks the beginning of the Bronx plan to rebuild its roster. The backlash against this move has more to do with the high expectations surrounding the signings than with the inclusion of Amed Rosario itself, as a large section of the fans were expecting a stronger blow in the market, a strong statement of intent about the pretensions of the Yankees for 2026.

Yankees bet on Amed Rosario as initial reinforcement

According to reports confirmed by The Post, the Yankees agreed to a one-year contract with Amed Rosario, who returned to the organization after being acquired via trade from the Washington Nationals last summer. The deal includes $250,000 in incentives, a modest figure for a team accustomed to high-impact moves.

Who is Amed Rosario, the new Yankees recruit?

Rosario, 30, is not a superstar, but he is a player with clear attributes: a reliable right-handed hitter against left-handed pitchers and the ability to cover multiple infield positions. Last season, he posted an .819 OPS against lefties, a figure that explains the interest of the New York management

Amed Rosario and his versatility as a key asset

The arrival of Rosario seeks to provide depth to an infield that still presents question marks. Ryan McMahon is projected as the starting third baseman, standing out for his defense, although with offensive difficulties against lefties. Ben Rice is set to play first base, while Jazz Chisholm Jr. would occupy second base, at least at the start of the campaign.

In the shortstop position, the situation is more delicate. Jose Caballero will cover the position while Anthony Volpe recovers from surgery on the labrum of his left shoulder. In this scenario, Rosario’s ability to alternate between second, third and even shortstop becomes a strategic resource.

A signing that doesn’t convince everyone in the Bronx

The signing of Rosario has generated annoyance among some fans who expected a more ambitious move, but the arrival of Rosario adds to the belief that the Yankees are “plugging holes” rather than building a dominant roster. Cashman has been criticized in recent years for avoiding major risks in free agency, and this move has not changed that perception. The pressure is still on for the team to make signings that will really put the Yankees as serious title contenders.
