Yankees fans dreamed of Cody Bellinger and woke up to a low-profile signing instead

The New York Yankees are still searching for answers to all their needs heading into 2026 – and for good reason: they’re the most storied franchise in all of MLB. But the team’s latest move has generated plenty of uncertainty, mystery, and even anger, as they passed on a high-profile free agent to bet on a player who hasn’t appeared in affiliated minor leagues since 2018.

Yankees fans dreamed of Cody Bellinger and woke up to a low-profile signing instead

Criticism was inevitable with big names like Kyle Tucker on the market or the strong desire to bring back Cody Bellinger, but this could end up being a highly positive gamble in the long run.

The Yankees’ new signing is Nick Torres, the 2025 Mexican League (LMB) MVP, who plays the corner outfield spots and has also seen time at first base.

What Nick Torres’ Arrival Means for the Yankees

Torres, formerly of Algodoneros de Unión Laguna, joins an outfield that already features names like Aaron Judge and Trent Grisham, with prospects Spencer Jones and Jasson Domínguez pushing for playing time.

The announcement of this new addition comes during what many see as a slow and frustrating offseason for the Yankees, dominated by their pursuit of Cody Bellinger.

The fact that Torres hasn’t played in affiliated minors since 2018 has left fans confused, waiting to see whether this is a major-league or minor-league deal. What’s undeniable is that his numbers in the LMB are eye-catching, and the Yankees could benefit from a power-hitting corner outfielder.

With Algodoneros, he hit .347/.425/.730 with 27 home runs and 79 RBI. Since 2021, he’s posted a .343 average and a 1.025 OPS with the club.

We’ll have to wait for answers to several questions surrounding this signing. In the end, it might prove to be a smart move – though patience is in short supply within an organization desperate for wins and a quick return to the World Series.
