The New York Yankees might not technically be the oldest ball club in MLB, but they are without a doubt the most successful. With 27 World Series triumphs, they sport a 16-title lead that will take an eternity to be closed in on.
With that success has come a mystique surrounding the franchise, embroidering the Yankees name with longstanding traditions. One of those traditions was surprisingly put to an end last season, when owner Hal Steinbrenner put an end to a team rule that forced players to have to shave their beards when joining the club.
That rule was put in place by George Steinbrenner, Hal’s father, in 1976. Getting rid of that rule should attract even more free agents than usual. Perhaps a wardrobe refresh could do the same.
New York Yankees players want to add alternate jersey to uniform rotation
Yankees players reportedly spoke with higher-ups at the ball club to try to persuade the organization into letting them wear an alternate navy jersey during some road games. The Yankees have classically used gray jerseys during away games.
This would be yet another break in tradition, as the Yankees have only ever used two uniforms – one for home and one for road games – throughout a season. Adding an alternate jersey would be a first, but it sounds like Steinbrenner is more flexible than ever before.
