Yankees ace Cam Schlittler heads back to Boston after death threats from Red Sox fans

Last season, Cam Schlittler went from a kid who grew up idolizing the Boston Red Sox to becoming one of the most hated villains at Fenway Park overnight. The New York Yankees ace delivered a dominant performance in Game 3 of the MLB Wild Card series, throwing eight scoreless innings and recording 12 strikeouts to eliminate Boston from the MLB playoffs.

Schlittler embraces villain role ahead of Fenway return

Since that October night, Red Sox fans have relentlessly harassed the pitcher and his family. They have received death threats, and Schlittler says he gets aggressive comments “every week… every day,” although direct threats are less frequent. So far, he has not involved law enforcement, but that remains an option if the situation escalates.

“Most normal fans could care less, right?” Schlittler said. “It’s just those diehards that have nothing else in their lives other than baseball. And the fact that I play for the New York Yankees makes it worse for them.”

His postgame comments only intensified the situation. Speaking to ESPN, Schlittler said: “There’s a line and I think they crossed it. I’m a competitor, and I’m going to go out there and dominate. You know how Boston fans are-we’re aggressive and try to get in people’s heads. They picked the wrong guy and the wrong team.”

The Yankees-Red Sox rivalry remains the most intense in MLB, and Schlittler’s story adds another layer. He grew up just 65 kilometers from Fenway and was once a Red Sox supporter, which has led many fans to label him a “traitor.”

Now, in his second MLB season, Schlittler is set to make his debut at Fenway Park wearing a Yankees uniform. He expects a hostile environment but insists he’s ready for it.

“It’s gonna be bad… loud,” he said. “There will be fans right by the bullpen yelling, maybe throwing things, trying to get at me. That’s what I expect. But I’m excited for it.”

Rather than being intimidated, the hostility appears to fuel him. “I don’t care that they hate me,” Schlittler added. “It actually motivates me.”

So far in the 2026 MLB season, Schlittler has been dominant. Across five starts, he has pitched at least five innings each time, totaling 36 strikeouts, allowing just 18 hits and six earned runs, posting a 1.95 ERA – the best among Yankees starting pitchers.
