World Baseball Classic 2026: Aaron Judge takes on captain role for Team USA

When news broke that New York Yankees slugger Aaron Judge would captain Team USA in the upcoming 2026 World Baseball Classic, the reaction was swift across the baseball world.

But perhaps no one sounded more pleased about the assignment than Yankees manager Aaron Boone.

Despite a disappointing postseason for New York, Judge‘s individual season was extraordinary. After leading the league in batting average, slugging, and OPS while smashing 53 home runs, Judge added a second consecutive American League MVP award to his resume, cementing his status as one of the game’s most dominant forces.

Boone, appearing on the YES Network’s Hot Stove program, didn’t hold back his enthusiasm for Judge‘s new role. While managerial statements about international play often revolve around the risk of injury or fatigue, Boone struck a different tone.

Speaking openly about Judge‘s opportunity to represent the United States, Boone said he’s “excited for him” and emphasized that having Judge lead Team USA makes perfect sense given his prominence in the sport.

“I think a player of his magnitude and his caliber, as popular as we’ve seen this tournament become – certainly, last time it was a special, special event,” Boone said. He also noted that while it’s a few weeks away from Yankees duties, he fully supports Judge‘s participation in the Classic.

Judge enters the WBC on the heels of a phenomenal 2025 season, during which he batted .331 with 53 home runs and 114 RBIs. The World Baseball Classic is scheduled from March 5-17, and Team USA has assembled a formidable roster aimed at dethroning defending champion Japan, who defeated the Americans in the 2023 final.

Star-studded U.S. squad and what it means

Judge isn’t the only marquee name on Team USA. Catcher Cal Raleigh, outfielder Pete Crow-Armstrong, infielder Gunnar Henderson, and power hitters Bryce Harper and Kyle Schwarber headline a roster blending featuring veterans and rising young talent.

The pitching staff is equally impressive, featuring established stars alongside highly touted prospects like Paul Skenes, providing depth and versatility crucial for a grueling international tournament.

Judge‘s captaincy is particularly significant because he skipped the 2023 WBC to focus on his first season as Yankees captain, making this his debut in leading the national squad.

Boone‘s support shows how rare and meaningful this moment is for Judge. With his combination of leadership and charisma, Judge is expected to be a central figure not just on the field but also in guiding Team USA’s clubhouse dynamics.

As March approaches, all eyes will be on Judge and his team to see if he can help the Americans reclaim a World Baseball Classic crown for the first time since 2017. Boone‘s endorsement and the roster’s strength suggest that Team USA is ready to make a serious run, led by one of baseball’s brightest stars.
