Willie Randolph not ready to hand NYC baton to Aaron Judge

Aaron Judge has become a total reference in Major League Baseball, in New York he is a total idol, however he is not yet number one. At least that is the opinion of Willie Randolph, a New York baseball legend.

Not even an inconsistent season for the Yankees in 2025 was enough to stop the individual dominance of Aaron Judge, as the Bronx slugger once again took home the American League Most Valuable Player award, thus adding his third MVP in pinstripes. With that achievement, ‘The Judge‘ placed himself on a list reserved only for baseball giants: Mickey Mantle, Yogi Berra and Joe DiMaggio.

Aaron Judge’s numbers in 2025

His numbers speak for themselves: he hit 53 home runs, won the first batting title of his career with a .331 average and led MLB with a 1.144 OPS. For many analysts, his blend of power and consistency makes him the current face of the franchise.

Willie Randolph responds: “This is still my city”

Despite those impressive numbers, for Willie Randolph, it is still not enough. During the BBWAA dinner in 2026, what seemed to be a night entirely dedicated to Aaron Judge had an unexpected moment. Willie Randolph, a five-time World Series champion and historical figure with both the Yankees and the Mets, made a comment that quickly went viral.

“Don’t get so big with those stripes, because this is my city,” Randolph said with a laugh, making it clear that New York is not given up so easily, not even to a triple MVP.

Beyond the tone in which Randolph made the comment, the message is clear: the legacy in the Bronx is not measured solely by individual awards.

Aaron Judge and MLB’s eternal debate: numbers vs. championships

Despite his offensive dominance, Aaron Judge carries an absence that weighs heavily in Yankees history: he does not have a World Series ring. In a franchise where greatness is measured in championships, that detail remains the main argument of his detractors.

With Judge as their leader, the Yankees have reached the postseason eight times, but have always fallen short. Even in 2025, when he had the best season of his career, the title slipped away again. However, Judge responded in the playoffs with his best performance so far, posting a 1.273 OPS in seven games. 2026 looks set to be a key year, if the championship comes, the debate could be over.
