Will LeBron James stay with the Lakers? NBA executive reveals key scenario

Time is running out for the Los Angeles Lakers. Although the regular season has not yet reached its halfway point, each game brings the team closer to a pivotal moment: the expiration of LeBron James’ contract. For now, the Lakers appear to have a plan in place.

The future of “King” James remains one of the NBA’s biggest uncertainties. After 23 seasons as a professional, LeBron is inching closer to retirement, even while continuing to perform at an elite level.

Speculation about his retirement has persisted for years, but his answer has consistently been “No.” This season, however, a new factor has emerged.

James exercised his player option last offseason, meaning he will become a free agent at the end of the current campaign. While his departure from Los Angeles seems possible, a team executive has revealed the Lakers’ backup plan.

The Lakers’ strategy to keep LeBron

In an interview with ESPN insiders Tim Bontemps and Brian Windhorst, a Lakers executive disclosed that the franchise is preparing a bold offer to retain the four-time NBA champion.

According to the source, who spoke anonymously, the proposal is simple: “Stay with the Lakers at a significantly reduced salary.” The executive referred to this approach as “The Dirk option.”

Bontemps and Windhorst explained that the nickname references Dirk Nowitzki’s decision to accept major pay cuts with the Dallas Mavericks late in his career, allowing the team to strengthen its roster around him.

Though the plan may sound desperate, some analysts argue it has merit.

Does LeBron still care about the money?

Yardbarker’s Ernesto Cova noted: “James is a billionaire. He’s earned more than $580 million in NBA salary alone, so money clearly shouldn’t be an issue.”

Still, Cova questioned whether LeBron truly wants to continue playing. “He’s complained about playing on Christmas and admitted that he doesn’t watch the NBA nowadays.”

Cova believes LeBron’s competitive fire may be fading-a factor that could undermine the Lakers’ plan and complicate any team’s attempt to convince him to extend his career.
