The future of the Cleveland Browns‘ passing game has become one of the most debated storylines of the 2026 offseason, but within the locker room, the narrative surrounding Shedeur Sanders is far more supportive than the “bust” labels suggested by outside critics.
Despite a rocky rookie campaign that saw him throw 10 interceptions against just seven touchdowns, Sanders has found a vocal ally in veteran defensive tackle Shelby Harris.
Appearing on the talk show After The Horn on March 4, Harris dismissed the scrutiny regarding Sanders‘ celebrity background and emphasized the young quarterback’s relentless preparation.
“I was highly impressed with the kid. I believe that he definitely got the short end of the stick. Everyone made all this big deal about stuff that was out of his control. He can’t control who his dad is,” Harris stated.
“But the one thing I will say is that Shedeur works, he works his a** off. And he takes the time to hang out with his teammates, which I think is extremely important, especially as a young quarterback.”
The Cam Ward precedent in Tennessee
Analysts often compare his early struggles to those of 2025 number-one overall pick Cam Ward.
During his first eight games with the Titans, Ward posted a modest 57.7 percent completion rate with six interceptions before a dominant late-season surge.
Sanders‘ camp argues that eight games is an insufficient sample size to judge a franchise cornerstone, especially during a season of organizational coaching changes.
The road to the 2026 starting job became significantly more crowded with the hiring of Todd Monken as head coach.
Monken, known for his aggressive offensive schemes, has notably declined to name a starter, characterizing the position as an “open competition” as the team evaluates both free-agent veterans and potential draft targets.
This lack of commitment has fueled reports that the Browns are actively scouting the 2026 rookie class or looking to acquire a veteran “bridge” quarterback to push Sanders in training camp.
