The action in the 2026 World Baseball Classic has begun, with several MLB stars aiming to lead their nations to the top. The New York Yankees are contributing a dozen players, though not all are representing the United States.
As is tradition since the tournament’s inception, several players choose to represent other nations-like Jazz Chisholm Jr.
Why is Jazz Chisholm Jr. representing Great Britain?
All-Star Jazz Chisholm Jr. is playing for Great Britain in the WBC because he is originally from The Bahamas-specifically Nassau-which was once a British colony. Under the competition’s eligibility rules, this qualifies him to represent Great Britain.
Another key figure joining the Yankees’ second baseman is Harry Ford, one of the top prospects in the majors, who was traded from the Seattle Mariners to the Washington Nationals.
Ford became the youngest player (20 years and 19 days old) to hit a home run in the 2023 Classic edition and was instrumental in Great Britain’s first-ever win in the tournament.
Jazz Chisholm will serve as the team’s captain before reporting back to the Yankees for what could be a pivotal season in his career-he becomes a free agent after 2026 and may be seeking a multi-year contract. It all depends on his performance this year.
At the very least, the WBC is the first stop in a 2026 full of action, where he could also play a key role in returning the Yankees to the top.
