Why the Yankees decision on Luis Gil should not surprise you

To the surprise of many, the pitcher who not long ago won American League Rookie of the Year, Luis Gil, will not be part of the Opening Day rotation for the New York Yankees. It might seem like a decision that condemns the player, but the truth is that it goes beyond that and reflects a strategic roster move.

Discard or strategy?

In New York, they will not need a fifth starter at the beginning of the 2026 MLB season, but rather until game number 14. That is why they opted to include more bullpen arms, according to what MLB.com insider Bryan Hoch reported.

“Luis Gil will be optioned to the Minor Leagues, Aaron Boone told reporters in Mesa,” Hoch wrote. “The Yankees don’t need a fifth starter until April 11. Cade Winquest, Brent Headrick and Jake Bird will all be on the Opening Day roster.”

As soon as the team needs a fifth starter, everything indicates that Luis Gil will be the chosen one. However, the organization prefers to proceed with caution, considering that the right-hander was only able to pitch in 11 games in 2025 due to a back injury.

In that span, Gil left good impressions by posting a 3.32 ERA and a ratio of 41 strikeouts to 33 walks. In addition, the New York Yankees have not forgotten his impact in 2024, when he was named AL Rookie of the Year after posting a 3.50 ERA and a strong 171/77 strikeout-to-walk ratio.

Sending him to the Minor Leagues may be surprising, but it responds more to roster management than performance concerns. Gil still has options available, and everything points to his stay away from the big league team being brief.

Sooner rather than later, the right-hander will be back in New York. When that happens, the Yankees expect to have a healthy pitcher, consistent starter, and someone ready to make a real impact in the MLB rotation.
