Why David Benavidez believes Terence Crawford can beat Canelo Alvarez

David Benavidez, a former super middleweight contender and current light heavyweight force, never got the chance to face Saul “Canelo” Alvarez when both were in the same division.

Despite being the mandatory challenger and one of the top contenders for Alvarez’s title, the fight never materialized. However, Benavidez remains invested in the sport’s biggest matchups, including the potential clash between Canelo and Terence Crawford.

The fight, expected to take place this September at Allegiant Stadium in Las Vegas, has already sparked discussions.

“It’s a good fight for both of them. I think it’s more important for Crawford than anybody, but if anyone can beat Canelo, I think Crawford could. The size difference plays a big role, but it’s still a great matchup,” Benavidez told The Ariel Helwani Show.

Benavidez on Crawford’s chances

Crawford, a former undisputed champion in multiple weight classes, will be moving up significantly to challenge Canelo, who has established himself across multiple divisions. While both fighters are similar in height, weight can make a difference-just as it did when Jermell Charlo, an undisputed junior middleweight champion, struggled against Canelo at 168 pounds in 2023.

Despite this, Benavidez believes Crawford has a legitimate shot, rating his chances at 7 out of 10.

“Crawford is a high-IQ fighter. If you put in the work and add strength the right way, you always have a puncher’s chance. He can definitely make Canelo uncomfortable and even hurt him,” Benavidez explained.

While Benavidez acknowledges some frustration about never fighting Canelo, he remains focused on his own career. Fresh off a pay-per-view victory against David Morrell, he now awaits the outcome of the February 22 rematch between Artur Beterbiev and Dmitry Bivol to determine his next move.

As for a future bout with Canelo? Benavidez remains optimistic.

“I think it will happen. I’m proving my value, selling out arenas, and growing as a fighter. In a few years, this fight could be even bigger than before-like Mayweather-Pacquiao.”

For now, Benavidez is focused on his journey while keeping an eye on the sport’s biggest showdowns.
