Why Brian Schottenheimer believes the Cowboys can do whatever they want in the 2026 NFL Draft

In an ideal world, an NFL team would head into an NFL Draft with the luxury of being able to take a “best player available” approach. Doing so allows a front office to stick and stay true to their big board of players rankings throughout all seven rounds.

That’s easier said than done, though. Most teams end up still having needs and weaknesses to fill at certain positions, which ultimately drives their draft decisions. The Dallas Cowboys technically still have holes to plug heading into the draft, but head coach Brian Schottenheimer doesn’t see it that way.

Brian Schottenheimer suggests Dallas Cowboys can take BPA strategy in upcoming draft

In fact, he feels that Jerry Jones and the front office did such a good job in free agency that the team can take a BPA approach in April. Schottenheimer recently spoke about the state of the Cowboys roster, saying that he believes enough needs were filled on the defensive side of the ball through free agency.

“I think we did a really good job of setting ourselves up to be able to draft natural and draft pure, which is what you want to do. You don’t want to have to be forced to reach for a player, that’s when you make mistakes. We’ve added some really good pieces, we’ve got some good depth.“

Despite that, Schottenheimer did admit that, “there’s still a few positions that we need to address.” Almost all of those are on defense, where the team made a lot of additions in free agency, but failed to bring in true impact players. With two first round picks, the Cowboys could keep fortifying what was a pitiful defense in 2025.

But no one should be surprised if the Cowboys decide to go offense with either of their two first-rounders. Jones has a penchant for sticking to his board and going with his guy; that’s how he ended up with CeeDee Lamb despite having two strong starting wide receivers already on the roster at the time.
