Puka Nacua’s issues could lead the Rams to cut him, replacement is reportedly already set

The Los Angeles Rams find themselves navigating a potentially complicated situation at wide receiver, as recent developments surrounding Puka Nacua have introduced uncertainty into what was once a stable position group. While no definitive decisions have been made yet, the circumstances have prompted speculation that the franchise could explore contingency plans, including targeting top draft talent Carnell Tate out of the Ohio State Buckeyes.

At just 23 years old, Nacua has already established himself as a key contributor for Los Angeles.

However, off-field concerns combined with durability questions have created a scenario in which the Rams may need to evaluate both short-term and long-term options at the position.

Tate, a rising prospect whose profile has quickly gained traction among evaluators and analysts, has emerged as a possible replacement if head coach Sean McVay decides to ditch Nacua.

Per Vic Tafur of The Athletic, the Rams could make an aggressive move to secure Tate in the upcoming draft. Rather than standing pat at the No. 13 overall pick, Tafur projects a trade with the Cincinnati Bengals to move up to No. 10.

“The Rams are all-in, and while they couldn’t get the Eagles to trade them A.J. Brown, this move might even be better,” Tafur wrote on March 25.

“They give up the No. 13 pick and a third-rounder to nab the best receiver in the draft.”

Such a move would align with the Rams‘ aggressive offseason strategy, which has already included a blockbuster acquisition of Trent McDuffie from the Kansas City Chiefs.

Why Carnell Tate fits the Rams’ vision

Physically, Tate mirrors many of Nacua‘s attributes at 6-foot-2 and 192 pounds, but his on-field skill set offers a distinct dynamic.

After stepping into a full-time role in 2025, he exceeded already lofty expectations, showcasing both vertical explosiveness and refined route-running ability.

Dane Brugler of The Athletic was emphatic in his analysis of the former Buckeyes standout, adding that he is “going to be a playmaking Z receiver in the NFL.”

“He builds his speed to be a dynamic playmaker downfield, while also showing the technical know-how to uncover on short-to-intermediate routes. He is an outstanding tracker of the football and consistently owns the catch point, regardless of placement,” he said.

The comparisons to former Ohio State standout Chris Olave, now with the New Orleans Saints, further highlight Tate‘s potential ceiling.

Meanwhile, Lance Zierlein of NFL.com emphasized the prospect’s natural receiving instincts: “Tate tracks throws at top speed and makes his adjustments to run under them. He combines timing, body control and catch radius to dominate air space and consistently lands on the winning side of contested catches,” he said.

“Pass catching comes effortlessly with soft, strong hands and he consistently works back on throws to keep ballhawks from hawking.”

Rams looking to strengthen regardless

Even beyond Nacua‘s situation, there are broader roster considerations. The wide consensus is that the team may need to reinforce its receiving corps, regardless of how the situation with Nacua ultimately unfolds.

Veteran receiver Davante Adams is on the wrong side of 30, and both he and Nacua dealt with injuries last season.

Whether the Rams move on from Nacua or simply look to strengthen their depth, Tate represents a compelling option.

In a rapidly evolving situation, Los Angeles appears determined to stay ahead of the curve, potentially securing its next cornerstone receiver before the need becomes urgent.
