The signing of Alex Bregman to the Boston Red Sox will be one of the most talked about for several years. The news has echoed in several corners of the world, mainly because of the high cost and the measures taken to make the annual payments. However, what is behind this decision?

The third baseman stated that the person who influenced him to play at Fenway Park was an idol of several years: Dustin Pedroia. The brand new Boston Red Sox icon in the mid-2000s contacted Alex Bregman to finalize the signing of his multi-year contract. But how did it happen?

Who was Dustin Pedroia?

It should be noted that Dustin Pedroia played his entire MLB career with the Boston Red Sox from 2006 to 2019, with a total of 1,512 games over 14 seasons.

Originally from California, Pedroia posted a .299 batting average with 922 runs, 394 doubles, 15 triples, 138 stolen bases and 140 home runs. Without a doubt, these are great numbers in the shortstop’s career.

Pedroia’s legacy lives on with Boston, as he led the Boston Red Sox to World Series titles in 2007 and 2013.Alex Bregman had contact with Dustin Pedroia who sometimes tried to persuade him to come to Boston. “He’s my favorite player and we had some conversations during the offseason and he talked to me about how special it was to play for Boston. It’s great to talk to him.”

Alex Bregman has praised Dustin Pedroia for years and knowing that he himself was interested in joining the Boston Red Sox was the spark to make the final decision.

Alex Bregman is expected to have a great performance this year, as he has done throughout his career. It is worth remembering that his numbers in 2024 marked a batting average of .260, with 30 doubles, two triples and 26 home runs while in 142 games.

For the Boston Red Sox, the team is armed to compete with its division and league rivals thanks to the addition of Walker Buehler and Garrett Crochet. However, Alex Bregman is a natural third baseman, as are Rafael Devers and Kristian Campbell, who would be relocated to second base or move to a designated hitter role.

Without a doubt, there are characters who mark our lives and for Alex Bregman, the influence of Dustin Pedroia was fundamental to travel to Boston and play in the legendary facilities of Fenway Park from 2025.
