Are New York Yankees fans right to criticize Cody Bellinger over contract demands?

The New York Yankees appear to have reached a stalemate in their negotiations with free agent outfielder Cody Bellinger.

According to multiple reports, the Yankees’ current offer of a five-year contract averaging $30 million per year has not satisfied Bellinger or his representation, led by agent Scott Boras. Bellinger‘s camp is reportedly seeking a seven-year deal at over $30 million AAV, creating a sizable gap between the two sides.

Fans have been vocal on social media, questioning both the player’s demands and the practicality of the Yankees’ approach.

One fan wrote, “It is truly mind boggling how delusional Cody Bellinger is. At some point, you have to respect it. This is a very fair deal that some Yankees fans might even call an overpay.”

Another added, “Find that 7-year deal elsewhere, beloved,” while one more commented, “Scott Boras is out of his f—— mind. Five years for $155-$160 million without deferrals is arguably ALREADY an overpay.”

The consensus among some fans seems clear: while Bellinger had an MVP-caliber season in 2019, his recent performance has been inconsistent, and the risk of committing to a long-term, high-value deal is significant.

“OPINION: The New York Yankees’ 5-year contract offer to Cody Bellinger, reportedly worth between $155-$160 million, is generous for a guy who just a few years ago went through a 24-month long slump, hitting .193 with a .611 OPS,” one fan observed. “There is so much risk with this guy.”

Yankees consider alternative targets

With talks at a standstill, the Yankees are now reportedly exploring other options in free agency. Younger outfielders such as Kyle Tucker and Bo Bichette have been suggested by fans as safer, long-term alternatives.

“If Cody Bellinger isn’t happy with an AAV north of $30M/year because of 2 less years, then he shouldn’t be on this team,” one supporter wrote.

“If the Yankees are willing to pay Cody Bellinger an AAV north of $30M/year, there’s ZERO reason they shouldn’t be pivoting to Tucker and Bichette.” Another fan echoed the sentiment, writing, “I am once again asking the New York Yankees to F—— PIVOT OFF OF BELLINGER ALREADY.”

Industry insiders suggest that the Yankees may eventually compromise, potentially offering a six-year contract with an AAV in the mid-$30 million range.

ESPN analyst Buster Olney recently reported that the Yankees’ camp is now operating under the assumption that Bellinger may sign elsewhere if another team meets his terms, signaling a potential end to months of waiting.

Given the competitive nature of the Yankees’ roster needs and Bellinger‘s own expectations, it remains to be seen whether the two sides can reconcile.
