Which national team has the highest goals-per-game average in World Cup history?

Since the first World Cup in 1930, plays and goals have taken center stage and been etched into fans’ memories.

However, there was one team that stood out for its scoring, but has not managed to return to the competition since 1986.

The team with the best goal average

With 87 goals in 32 matches, the Hungary National Football Team leads with an average of 2.72 goals per game-a record no other team has managed to surpass or even match to date.

Despite this historic scoring average and having been one of the leading forces in world soccer, Hungary has not qualified for a World Cup since Mexico 1986.

Hungary has played in nine editions of the tournament: 1934, 1938, 1954, 1958, 1962, 1966, 1978, 1982, and 1986, its last appearance in soccer’s premier event.

In that tournament, they were placed in Group C alongside teams such as Canada, France, and the Soviet Union. Despite defeating the Canadians (2-0) and Les Bleus (3-0), the heavy 0-6 loss they suffered against the Russians in their first match knocked them out of the tournament, and they never played another World Cup match.

Of course, they also had their moments of glory. They reached their peak in the 1954 tournament, when they reached the final undefeated at the Wankdorfstadion in Bern, Switzerland. There, they faced West Germany, whom they had already defeated 8-3 in the group stage. They started off leading 2-0 (Puskás and Czibor), but a powerful comeback by the Germans led to a 3-2 loss in what became known as the “Miracle of Bern.”

Now, with the desire to return to the World Cup after several years of absence from the tournament, Hungary is looking ahead to the 2030 qualifiers, as on November 16, Ireland won 3-2 away in the final minute, denying Dominik Szoboszlai’s Hungary the chance to play in the playoff. Will we see their return in the 2030 edition?
