What did Di María say about the possibility of returning to the Argentina national team?

Ángel Di María has left an indelible mark on the hearts of every Argentine fan and fans around the world. After announcing that he would no longer wear the blue and white jersey following his second consecutive Copa América title in 2024, the desire for him to return is immense, but he has stated that he has “completed a cycle.”

Now, following a stellar performance with Rosario Central, he was once again asked about the possibility of rejoining Lionel Scaloni’s squad, and his response surprised everyone.

Di María discusses his return to the Argentine national team

At 38, he continues to play at an elite level for his hometown team, where, while still recovering from a left adductor injury, he helped spark the comeback against Banfield.

After his performance, one of the journalists asked him about the possibility that if the Albiceleste coach sees these plays, he might call him up: “If Scaloni is channel-surfing and sees this performance by Ángel Di María, what do we do?“

Far from giving a direct answer, Di María responded with humor and a touch of irony: “I think Leo [Scaloni] channel-surfs in Europe, not here. So we’re good, no worries,” ‘El Fideo’ replied jokingly.

On the other hand, Ángel acknowledged that he’s still not 100% after the injury he suffered in the clásico against Newell’s: “It was a bit tough for me. I’m still feeling a little discomfort, but I needed to get in, I wanted to win the game, and luckily things worked out,” he added.

Despite speculation among fans and journalists, Di María has made it clear on several occasions that his time with the national team is over. After a historic run that saw him win the 2021 and 2024 Copa América, the 2022 Finalissima, and the 2022 FIFA World Cup, the player believes it’s time to make way for the next generation.

Ángel has already tallied four goals and three assists in the 2026 Clausura Tournament. Furthermore, Di María has left his mark on the national team’s recent history: he scored decisive goals in major finals and became one of the symbols of the Argentine national team’s most successful era in recent decades.

For this reason, every time he’s in good form, the debate about a possible return resurfaces, although for now the player himself seems determined to close this chapter.
