“Two people were shot dead by state authorities in Minnesota. Playing in a city that is currently experiencing riots and where people are being shot does not align with the values of our club,” said the manager.
In addition, Werder is concerned about the possibility that not all of its players could enter the United States without problems. The U.S. Customs and Border Protection has presented a plan that would require people entering the country to disclose and review their social media profiles to identify security risks at an early stage. The regulation is not yet in force, but the club does not want to take any risks.
“It is not clear which players will be able to enter the US due to the implementation of stricter entry requirements, which include reviewing social media profiles from the last five years,” Filbry said.
Finally, the manager also explained that the team’s sporting situation (Werder Bremen are in 16th place with a real danger of facing a relegation play-off) does not help in this type of medium-term planning.
