Venus Williams addresses her sister Serena’s jealousy after her return to the courts at 45

Venus and Serena Williams are one of the most dominant doubles teams in the history of women’s tennis. The legendary sisters won 22 championships together, setting the standard for what a tennis pair should be. Now, however, Venus has a new partner, and that could cause some friction with her sister.

The Williams sisters defined an era in the WTA. Aside from their individual achievements, as a team they won 14 Grand Slam titles and three Olympic gold medals, a feat very difficult for anyone to replicate.

While Serena officially retired in 2022 to focus on her family and personal businesses, Venus has continued her career intermittently, playing a handful of matches each year.

The five-time Wimbledon champion will play the first of those matches in the doubles at the ASB Classic in Auckland, New Zealand, teaming up with one of her longtime rivals.

Venus Williams will debut a new partner in Auckland

The elder Williams sister received a wild card to participate in the traditional tournament, where she will compete in both singles and doubles, partnering with Elina Svitolina in the latter.

“We’ve always been opponents, but finally we’re on the same team, and I hope Serena won’t be jealous,” Williams joked about her partnership with the 31-year-old Slovenian.

However, Venus knows that her return to the courts at 45 will not be easy. “I have so much experience, but I probably play less than any other player in this draw.”

With opponents half her age, Venus knows she can’t afford to let her guard down. “It’s an interesting position to be in, because I have a lot to pull out.”

Svitolina knows she’s playing with a legend

The Slovenian player, for her part, is aware of who she’ll have by her side in the doubles tournament. “It’s great to share a court with her, and to play with such a legend is a privilege.”

Williams shared the sentiment. “If there’s one thing she’s going to do, she’s going to compete,” Venus affirmed, clarifying that both will rely on their singles instincts to succeed in the doubles tournament.

Svitolina and Williams will begin the doubles tournament this Sunday, Monday, in New Zealand, facing Iva Jovic and Alexandra Eala. In singles, Venus will debut against Magda Linette.
