Steelers’ last plea to Aaron Rodgers could be trading for Pro Bowl wide receiver

As of right now, as the NFL Scouting Combine gets underway, the Pittsburgh Steelers have no idea if Aaron Rodgers will be their starting quarterback in 2026 or not.

The departure of head coach Mike Tomlin threw Rodgers’ future for a loop, only to become stablized when Pittsburgh hired Mike McCarthy to replace him – Rodgers’ longtime coach on the Green Bay Packers. But Rodgers doesn’t have any contractual obligation to the Steelers.

Rodgers is technically set to become an unrestricted free agent next month. ESPN’s Adam Schefter recently mentioned the Minnesota Vikings as a potential destination, a team that appeared to be a favorite for Rodgers last offseason before he ended up in Pittsburgh.

Pittsburgh Steelers might trade for Brian Thomas Jr.

Thomas fell out of favor with first-year head coach Liam Coen in 2025, just one season after putting up 1,330 total yards and 10 touchdowns as a Pro Bowl rookie. Thomas would give the Steelers an explosive downfield receiver, which was supposed to be DK Metcalf last year.

Rodgers and Metcalf never seemed to gel. Perhaps Thomas would help Rodgers connect on some of those deep throws that fell incomplete in 2025.
