Two painful defeats that have Barcelona trembling

At Montilivi, Girona have made themselves strong and took all three points in an exciting match where Barcelona suffered and once again saw their lead slip away.

With goals from Thomas Lemar in the 66th minute and Fran Beltran in the 86th minute, Girona have been reminded of the team that came close to achieving the feat a couple of seasons ago.

Barcelona drop another three points in LaLiga

Despite having a better start, managing to take the lead with a goal from Pau Cubarsi in the 59th minute, defensive carelessness and the verticality of the team dressed in white today, managed to turn the score around and get an important victory in their aspirations to reach European places.

With a dramatic ending, with the expulsion of Joel Roca in the 99th minute, and a missed penalty by Lamine Yamal in the first half that would have meant at least a draw, Girona climbed a couple of positions to reach 12th place with 29 points, still far from the top five, but with a significant boost that could help them continue their ascent up the table.

Crisis at Barcelona? Second consecutive defeat

Only on February 12, Atletico inflicted a heavy defeat on them in the semi-final of the Copa del Rey, which ended with a score of 4-0 and now they have let valuable points slip away to give up the lead to a Real Madrid side that, at least in the league, is on a roll.

In the space of a week, the Catalan side find themselves up against the wall in the two competitions they have the best chance of winning. However, there is still time to put things right, although to do so they will have to pick up three points and hope for a slip-up from Real Madrid in LaLiga, while in the Copa del Rey they need a miracle at the Camp Nou on March 3 in the second leg of the semi-final against Atletico Madrid. On the plus side, Xavi Hernandez’s side will face their next three matches at home, which could be crucial to getting out of the hole they have found themselves in. However, at least in the Copa del Rey, the outlook is not very encouraging.

Barcelona’s upcoming matches

  • Barcelona vs Levante | February 22
  • Barcelona vs Villarreal | February 28
  • Barcelona vs Atletico Madrid | March 3
  • Athletic Club vs Barcelona | March 8

With the adverse scoreline in the Copa del Rey, the inconsistency shown and Real Madrid‘s good form in LaLiga, as well as the difficulty of a competition such as the Champions League, this could be a fatal year for Hansi Flick and his team, something that until a few weeks ago seemed unthinkable.
