Timberwolves’ Chris Finch fined $35,000 after ejection vs. Thunder

Minnesota Timberwolves head coach Chris Finch is paying a steep price for losing his cool. Following his fiery outburst at officials during Friday’s win over the Oklahoma City Thunder, the NBA has officially slapped Finch with a $35,000 fine. The league cited “inappropriate language toward the referees” and failure to exit the court quickly after being ejected.

The dramatic moment added fuel to an already intense matchup, as Minnesota sought revenge after falling to the Thunder in last season’s Western Conference Finals.

Finch was ejected just six minutes into the game

The incident occurred early in the first quarter at the Target Center. With tensions already high and physical play escalating, Finch repeatedly voiced his frustration over officiating calls. His animated complaints quickly earned him back-to-back technicals, resulting in an automatic ejection only six minutes into the contest.

Despite losing their head coach before the game could settle, the Timberwolves responded with intensity. Players later admitted that Finch’s passion helped light a spark. Whether intentional or not, his frustration may have served as motivation for a Minnesota squad eager to send a message against one of the West’s top contenders.

The Timberwolves faced even more questionable whistles as the game progressed – particularly late in the fourth quarter when bodies collided, and the physicality reached playoff levels. Yet Minnesota stayed composed, closing strong to seal a statement victory over Oklahoma City.

Minnesota keeps the ball rolling

At 18-10, the Timberwolves continue to assert themselves as a force in the West, remaining firmly in playoff position despite a highly competitive conference race. Friday’s win not only avenged last season’s postseason loss but reinforced Minnesota’s belief that they can hang with elite teams even amid adversity.

Finch’s ejection now becomes an expensive footnote in a high-stakes night that showed the Timberwolves’ resilience. While $35,000 is no small penalty, the victory softened the blow. As many coaches will admit, sometimes passion comes at a price.

Minnesota returns to action Sunday, Dec 21st night at home, hosting Giannis Antetokounmpo and the Milwaukee Bucks. Tip-off is scheduled for 7:00 p.m. ET.

With emotions running high and postseason implications attached to nearly every matchup, the Timberwolves will look to build on their momentum while likely hoping their leader stays on the sideline for a full 48 minutes.

Finch now joins a growing list of coaches fined this season for heated interactions with officials, renewing questions about officiating consistency, emotional thresholds, and league discipline standards.

Whether the fine becomes a turning point or just another headline, one thing is clear: The Wolves are playing with fire, confidence, and urgency.
