Judge is one of the biggest figures in baseball today, his power and leadership not only shines in New York. Now, the Yankees slugger will take on a new challenge: to be the captain of the United States in the 2026 World Baseball Classic.

Aaron Judge, the chosen one to lead the United States

When Team USA takes the field at the next World Baseball Classic in 2026, it will do so under the leadership of Aaron Judge. The New York Yankees outfielder was named captain by manager Mark DeRosa in an announcement that marks a turning point in his international career.

Judge, who is coming off another dominant season in MLB, with a .331 average, 53 home runs and 114 runs batted in, will make his debut in the tournament. He will also be the first player to officially commit to the United States for this edition.

The responsibility is no less. In 2023, the U.S. team reached the final, where it lost to Japan. Now, the goal is clear: to lift the trophy again.

How was Aaron Judge chosen as captain?

The story behind the appointment reflects respect and strategy. DeRosa was clear from the beginning that he wanted Judge as the face of the team. However, he did not want to pressure him.

The first step was taken by pitching coach Andy Pettitte, who spoke with the player in Tampa. After that conversation, Judge confirmed his interest and DeRosa wasted no time: he called him almost immediately. The official response came shortly afterwards: he was ready to represent his country.

DeRosa even notified Mike Trout, who was the captain in the previous edition. The Angels’ star’s reaction was straightforward: “It should be him“.

Judge remembered watching last year’s final from home, when Trout took to the field with the United States flag on his shoulder. That image was etched in his mind.

“It’s something special to have the opportunity to represent our country,” said the slugger. For him, the honor goes beyond baseball; it’s about recognizing those who have served the nation and taking on the responsibility with humility.

In 2023, he did not participate due to his free agency and his recent nine-year, $360 million contract with the Yankees. At that time, he prioritized his role as the club’s new captain, the first since Derek Jeter, but this time the scenario was different.

Having Judge not only adds offensive power, but his leadership in the locker room is highly valued. Yankees manager Aaron Boone himself has described him as one of the current faces of baseball.
