They use Lionel Messi in Barcelona elections to hit Laporta where it hurts: “Desire to return…”

Leo Messi’s departure from Barcelona is still a sore point at the club, especially now that the club has entered an election period. It is undoubtedly a weapon to be used against Joan Laporta, who was unable to renew the Argentine despite the promises he made during the 2021 campaign, in which he claimed that he was the only one capable of ensuring that the striker would stay.

Marc Ciria, one of the candidates for next March’s elections, has brought back the Argentine’s image. He has done so by placing a banner on a building in a street in Barcelona showing Messi’s image with the slogan: “Looking forward to seeing you again”.

An initiative that emulates the one Laporta did five years ago. At that time, he hung a banner on a building in Madrid that read “Looking forward to seeing you again”. It was an action that had an enormous impact as it was a clear challenge to Real Madrid, placing this banner in a street in the capital of Spain.

Although the candidates are using Messi’s name a lot, the footballer has no intention of getting involved in the electoral process. Leo is clear that he will return to the club in a few years, but it is not yet the time, because he is still active in football and has a World Cup just around the corner. He will not take part in the election campaign.
