The Yankees threaten the Mets with keeping Cody Bellinger even though this separates him from any team

There’s no doubt that Cody Bellinger is one of the most attractive names in this offseason’s MLB free agency market, drawing interest from multiple teams – including the New York Mets and New York Yankees, both actively working to address one of their biggest roster needs.

The Yankees threaten the Mets with keeping Cody Bellinger even though this separates him from any team

For the Mets, Bellinger fits perfectly after losing Pete Alonso to the Baltimore Orioles. The former NL MVP posted a .272 batting average, .814 OPS, 29 home runs, and 98 RBI in 2025 with the Yankees, while providing elite defense. He wouldn’t just replace Alonso’s offensive production – he could also slide seamlessly to first base.

Another major plus: Bellinger’s versatility allows him to excel in the outfield, which remains a top priority for the New York Mets.

The downside – not just for the Mets, but for any MLB suitor – is the massive contract investment required. The good news for New York is that owner Steve Cohen has shown a clear willingness to spend, as evidenced by the $765 million megadeal given to Juan Soto last offseason.

Negotiations Stalled Over One Key Detail

MLB insiderJon Heyman of the New York Post highlighted several factors keeping Bellinger away from the Mets during a Bleacher Report live stream.

“Are [the Mets] likely to get Bellinger? Wouldn’t say that. The Yankees still seem somewhat confident that they can land Bellinger,” Heyman said.

He added: “Mets offensive options other than Bellinger? Well, we know they’re looking at Austin Hays, as well. Bellinger would be their top choice. Obviously, they haven’t named the right number of years at this point. That’s why they don’t have him.”

Heyman also shed light on the contract length Bellinger is seeking: “[Agent Scott Boras] is certainly looking for the years… Bellinger, you would think, could get potentially a seven-year deal. I predicted six years for $180 million. We shall see. Might have to settle for six.”

So we’ll have to wait and see which side blinks first – or where Cody Bellinger ultimately ends up playing next MLB season.
