The three “desperate” teams that could seek to sign Anthony Davis

Anthony Davis has become one of the NBA’s most closely watched figures following his stunning arrival in Dallas as part of the blockbuster trade that sent Luka Doncic to the Los Angeles Lakers.

The move reshaped the league’s balance of power overnight, placing Davis at the center of the Dallas Mavericks‘ present and future while simultaneously reigniting speculation about how long his stay in Texas might last.

Since the trade, league executives and analysts have closely monitored Dallas’ direction. The Mavericks acquired Davis to anchor both ends of the floor and accelerate their push toward contention, but his contract, injury history, and the team’s evolving roster construction have naturally fueled questions across the league.

Rival front offices are known to monitor situations like this closely, particularly when a franchise undergoes a seismic shift involving a generational star.

Early speculation linked teams such as the Atlanta Hawks to potential interest should Dallas ever reconsider its position.

The logic was straightforward. Atlanta has long searched for a defensive cornerstone capable of transforming its identity, and Davis remains one of the league’s most impactful defenders when available. However, recent commentary suggests the list of teams paying attention may be broader and more urgent than initially believed.

Davis‘ on-court value is not in dispute. A champion, multiple-time All-Star, and perennial All-Defensive presence, he brings elite rim protection, switchability, and efficient scoring.

According to recent analysis from ESPN and Basketball Reference, lineups featuring Davis consistently rank among the league’s best in defensive rating. That type of impact inevitably attracts attention from organizations facing shrinking championship windows.

That urgency was highlighted during a recent episode of The Lowe Post podcast, where veteran NBA analyst Zach Lowe pointed to two franchises operating under heightened pressure.

“AD has been all over the news. … I don’t know, but I’d keep an eye on the Bucks and the Clippers, just for the desperation factor.”

Pressure Builds Across the League

The Milwaukee Bucks find themselves at a crossroads. With Giannis Antetokounmpo squarely in his prime and roster flexibility diminishing, Milwaukee’s front office is widely viewed as being in win-now mode.

League insiders from The Athletic have previously noted that the Bucks remain aggressive when elite talent becomes available.

Adding Davis alongside Antetokounmpo would create a defensive pairing capable of overwhelming opponents while alleviating offensive burdens during postseason play.

The Los Angeles Clippers face a similar sense of urgency. Despite years of high expectations, the Kawhi Leonard and Paul George era has yet to deliver a Finals appearance.

With contract decisions looming and the franchise preparing to fully step into its new arena era, bold action remains a realistic consideration. Davis‘ ability to elevate playoff defense and provide interior dominance aligns closely with what the Clippers have historically lacked.

For Dallas, the situation remains fluid. The Mavericks did not acquire Anthony Davis with the intention of flipping him, but the NBA landscape rarely stays static.

Front offices routinely reassess timelines, especially after transformative trades. Should circumstances change, Dallas would command significant interest and leverage given Davis‘ stature.

As the offseason approaches, the Mavericks‘ experiment with Anthony Davis will continue to draw league-wide scrutiny.

Whether he remains the centerpiece of Dallas’ new era or becomes the focal point of another dramatic shift, the combination of elite talent and organizational urgency ensures his name will remain prominent in NBA conversations.
