Rumors and market strategies of some franchises go hand in hand. This phenomenon can be seen in the offseason with the issue of trades. There are organizations that wait until the last moment to secure the player of their interests and resort to special tactics like the one apparently used by the Red Sox with Bo Bichette to pressure Alex Bregman.
In the final weeks of 2025, several reports began to circulate that the Boston team was very interested in Bo Bichette. The Blue Jays player was reportedly on the radar after no agreement was reached for Alex Bregman to return to the roster. The Red Sox’s alleged intention made headlines amid rumors that Bichette was being targeted by the Dodgers, Yankees and Mets. Experts and analysts mentioned that it was strange the sudden bid by the Red Sox for a baseball player who was not in their plans for the 2026 season.
So where does the alleged interest come from? Analyst Lou Merloni surmises that it is a tactic by the Red Sox to corner Bregman into signing with the team after presenting him with a final contract offer. In other words, Bichette is “bait” to get him to take the bait.
When I start hearing that the Red Sox are turning their attention to Bo Bichette, all they’re saying is, ‘Alex, accept the deal we have on the table.’ It’s like they’re playing media games, trying to convince Bregman and Boras to accept what the Red Sox have on the market
Merloni suggests that the rumor of interest in Bichette was planned and leaked by the Boston franchise to put pressure on Bregman and speed up his affirmative response to close his signing as soon as possible, because, as far as has been reported, there has been no dialogue between the Blue Jays player and the Red Sox people.
The Giants, a team that does want Bichette
Meanwhile, another team that has been strongly rumored as an alternative candidate is the San Francisco Giants. According to Andrew Simon of MLB.com, Bichette could fit perfectly in an infield where Willy Adames and Matt Chapman are already established, leaving second base as the ideal point of reinforcement.
Buster Posey’s leadership in the front office and the club’s style of play make San Francisco an attractive and tidy proposition for the Blue Jays player.
