The Raptors give one of the biggest busts in NBA history a final chance in the league

The Toronto Raptors are taking a low-risk look at a familiar name, signing guard Markelle Fultz to a 10-day contract.

For Fultz, the move represents another opportunity to extend an NBA career that has been marked by both promise and setbacks.

The former No. 1 overall pick in the 2017 draft has struggled to live up to expectations and is widely viewed as one of the league’s biggest draft disappointments. Now 27, he is attempting to carve out a path back into a regular role after last appearing in the NBA during the 2024-25 season with the Sacramento Kings.

Fultz showed limited production last time

His most recent NBA stint offered limited production. Fultz averaged 2.7 points, 1.0 rebounds and 1.3 assists in just 8.8 minutes per game across 21 appearances with Sacramento, numbers that reflected his reduced role at that stage of his career.

However, his time in the G League has provided a more encouraging glimpse. Playing for Raptors 905, Toronto’s affiliate, Fultz has averaged 9.8 points, 5.3 assists and 2.5 rebounds in six games, all starts, showing he can still handle playmaking responsibilities and contribute with consistent minutes.

Across his NBA career, which includes stops with the Philadelphia 76ers, Orlando Magic and Kings,Fultz has posted averages of 10.4 points, 4.4 assists and 3.2 rebounds in 255 games. While those numbers suggest a capable guard, they fall short of the expectations typically attached to a top overall pick.

For the Raptors, the signing is a low-commitment move that allows them to evaluate Fultz‘s current form at the NBA level. For Fultz, it may be one of his final chances to prove he still belongs in the league. How he performs during this brief window could determine whether he earns another contract-or if his NBA journey is nearing its end.
