The problem with Kevin Durant becoming MVP lies in his nationality, according to LeBron James’ agent

As the NBA season unfolds, one of the most discussed topics isn’t just who might win the MVP, it’s why Kevin Durant is barely mentioned in that conversation at all.

With Denver Nuggets star Nikola Jokic sidelined by a knee injury, the MVP race has shifted dramatically. While this could have opened the door for Durant, who has been exceptional for the Houston Rockets, his name still isn’t appearing near the top of most MVP lists.

This surprising omission has sparked strong reactions, particularly from Rich Paul, one of the most influential agents in basketball today.

At 37 and in his first season with Houston, Durant has continued to play at an elite, near-unmatched level. He is averaging 25.4 points, 5.0 rebounds, and 4.5 assists per game, numbers that reflect his versatility and dominance on both ends of the court.

Beyond statistics, Durant has helped the Rockets become serious contenders in the Western Conference, with a 21-10 record and currently holding the third seed. Despite these accomplishments, he has often been overlooked in MVP tracking, such as the NBA’s KIA MVP Ladder, where he is not even ranked in the top 10.

Rich Paul, known for representing LeBron James, publicly questioned this discrepancy during the Game Over podcast.

“Why isn’t Kevin Durant’s name in the MVP race?” Paul asked. He suggested that part of the reason could be Durant‘s nationality, claiming that American players are sometimes unfairly penalized despite sustained excellence.

Paul pointed to a historical pattern with LeBron James, noting how all-time greats can face skepticism later in their careers even when performing at elite levels. While statistics and team success should theoretically dominate the discussion, Paul believes narratives and perceptions often overshadow objective performance.

Nationality and narrative: Does it matter?

Paul‘s comments have sparked heated debate across the NBA community. Is being American truly a disadvantage in MVP considerations, or is this more about public perception and storylines? Critics argue that nationality should play no role in award voting; MVP recognition should reflect performance alone.

Supporters of Paul‘s view, however, see a trend where even legendary players face skepticism once their careers reach a certain stage.

Durant‘s situation highlights how media narratives, legacy discussions, and popularity can influence awards as much as stats.

Even with Jokic‘s injury potentially affecting his eligibility, due to the NBA’s 65-game minimum requirement for end-of-season awards, Durant has yet to crack the mainstream MVP conversation. His numbers and impact are undeniable, yet recognition remains limited.

Paul‘s perspective has reignited the debate over fairness and the factors that truly shape the MVP race, reminding fans that awards are often influenced by more than just points, rebounds, and assists.
