Roger Federer, considered by millions of tennis fans around the world to be the greatest player of all time, has been elected to the International Tennis Hall of Fame in his first year of eligibility, it was announced on Wednesday, November 19. The tennis star, who retired in 2022, expressed his gratitude for being included in this select group of global tennis players who have etched their names in history.

In September 2022, the tennis world, and the world of sports in general, came to a standstill when “His Majesty” announced his retirement. Federer’s fans wept before, during, and after the Laver Cup, which brought together the biggest names in tennis to bid farewell to the Swiss legend. His Team Europe included, of course, his greatest rivals: Rafael Nadal, Novak Djokovic, and Andy Murray.

Roger Federer won 20 Grand Slams, 103 singles titles, and was ranked No. 1 for 237 weeks

Federer won 20 Grand Slam singles titles, becoming the first male player to achieve that feat. Federer is known as the King of the All England Club, home of Wimbledon, for being the only player in history to have won it 8 times. His other major titles were: 6 Australian Opens, 5 US Opens, and 1 French Open. At one point, he was the all-time leader in Grand Slam titles before being surpassed by Nadal and Djokovic.

He also held the No. 1 ranking for a record 237 consecutive weeks, spent a total of 310 weeks at the top of the ATP rankings, and finished five different years ranked No. 1. During his career, Federer won 103 singles titles and 1,251 matches. The Swiss player was just 6 titles away from equaling the all-time record holder: american Jimmy Connors (109).

One of Federer’s greatest plays: Wimbledon 2012 against Andy Murray

“It is a tremendous honor to be inducted into the International Tennis Hall of Fame and to stand alongside so many of the game’s greatest champions,” said Federer. “Throughout my career, I have always valued the history of tennis and the example set by those who came before me. It was very special to receive the news at Swiss Tennis, surrounded by the next generation of players, the place where my own journey began,” Federer said.

He continued: “To be recognized in this way by the sport and by my peers is deeply humbling. I look forward to visiting Newport next August to celebrate this special moment with the tennis community.” It would be difficult to say which has been the greatest play, the best shot in Roger Federer’s career. However, many think of that 2012 shot against Andy Murray in the Wimbledon final: the most elegant drop shot in history.
