The Patriots are preparing a gift for Drake Maye valued at $96 million for next season

The pursuit of the Vince Lombardi Trophy has led the New England Patriots to the doorstep of a blockbuster trade as the 2026 free agency period approaches. Following a season that saw the franchise return to the pinnacle of the AFC with a 14-3 record with Drake Maye leading the charge, the front office is reportedly exploring a high-stakes move for Philadelphia Eagles star wide receiver A.J. Brown.

The interest, first detailed by MassLive, suggests that the Patriots are eager to capitalize on Brown‘s reported dissatisfaction with his current workload in Philadelphia, despite his substantial $96 million contract.

Acquiring the three-time Pro Bowler would likely require a steep investment, with league insiders suggesting the Eagles may demand both first- and second-round draft picks in return.

For New England, the deal offers a unique opportunity for a reunion; Brown spent his first three NFL seasons playing under current Patriots head coach Mike Vrabel during their time with the Tennessee Titans.

This established rapport is viewed as a primary factor that could ease Brown‘s transition into a New England offense that is looking to evolve after falling to the Seattle Seahawks 29-13 in Super Bowl LX earlier this February.

Salary cap navigation and the future of Patriots’ receiving corps

The logistical feasibility of adding a star of Brown‘s caliber is linked to the status of veteran wideout Stefon Diggs.

In his first season with New England, Diggs provided the reliable perimeter presence the team had lacked for years. However, his future is clouded by a looming $26.5 million cap hit for the 2026 season.

A critical deadline arrives on March 13, when a $6 million salary guarantee is triggered, forcing the Patriots to decide whether to release the veteran or find a middle ground.

While some league reports have speculated that the Patriots might cut Diggs to realize nearly $17 million in cap savings, internal discussions have reportedly shifted toward a potential contract restructure.

The goal of such a move would be to retain Diggs while creating the financial headroom necessary to absorb Brown‘s contract.

If successful, this maneuver would provide third-year quarterback Drake Maye with arguably the most formidable receiving duo in professional football, significantly increasing the team’s chances of navigating a deep postseason run in 2027.
