Eagles shock NFL by drafting player who has never played football

The 2026 NFL Draft is officially on the books, and like every year it was a life-changing moment not only for the athletes, but also for their families and some franchises. What began with Fernando Mendoza heading to the Las Vegas Raiders, becoming the 41st quarterback selected first overall in league history, concluded with 257 prospects trying to find their professional homes.

The “Steel City” lived up to its reputation as a premier sports town, setting a staggering all-time attendance record of 805,000 fans over the three-day event in Pittsburgh, comfortably eclipsing the previous record set by Detroit just two years ago. The next stop on the draft will be the National Mall in front of the U.S. Capitol in Washington, D.C., on April 2027.

Howie Roseman’s Masterclass: Why the Eagles Remain the NFC’s Gold Standard

In recent memory, one of the best front offices during Draft days, and the season in general. is the one led by Howie Roseman in Philadelphia. There is a reason why the Philadelphia Eagles have ranked among the NFC’s elite for the better part of the decade, boasting two Super Bowl titles in three appearances, and it all starts with the team’s crafty architect.

This past weekend was a clinic in aggressive roster building. Roseman didn’t just sit back; he actively manipulated the board, notably leapfrogging the rival Steelers to snag highly-coveted wide receiver Makai Lemon.

He followed that up by swinging a high-impact trade for Pro Bowl pass rusher Jonathan Greenard and methodically addressing depth across the roster. However, his most intriguing move came in the late rounds when the Eagles traded for seventh-round capital with one specific “project” in mind: Nigerian defensive tackle Uar Bernard.

The Next Jordan Mailata? Scouting the “Unusual” Athleticism of Uar Bernard

If this story sounds familiar, it’s because we’ve seen the Eagles strike gold with this high-risk, high-reward strategy before. Back in 2018, Philadelphia took a flyer on an Australian rugby player named Jordan Mailata, who had never touched a football. Today, Mailata is a franchise left tackle and a team captain. Roseman is clearly betting that lightning can strike twice with Uar Bernard, a standout from the International Player Pathway (IPP) Program.

Bernard is a physical anomaly. At 6-4 and 306 pounds, he recently clocked a 4.63-second 40-yard dash and recorded a 39-inch vertical jump, numbers that put him in the same elite athletic tier as superstars like Myles Garrett. The Eagles didn’t just stumble upon these stats; they did their homework.

Defensive line coach Clint Hurtt was sent to Florida for a face-to-face meeting, ensuring this wasn’t just a “numbers” pick but a calculated investment in a “passion project.” Roseman himself admitted that Bernard is “certainly unusual,” but for a team that specializes in turning raw athleticism into NFL stardom, Bernard could be the next great international success story in the league.
