The Mets’ collapse would force them to make changes

The New York Mets‘ season has taken a turn that is as unexpected as it is concerning. Just a few days ago, the team seemed to have found its way thanks to the momentum of several young talents and an offense that was beginning to wake up. Following a 6-1 streak in which they scored 53 runs and overcame deficits in each of their three victories against the Tigers, the feeling was that New York had finally left its crisis behind.

However, that illusion quickly crumbled. After splitting a series against the Nationals, the Mets traveled to Miami to face a Marlins team that occupied last place in the division. What seemed like an ideal opportunity to continue climbing the standings ended up becoming one of their worst series of the year. New York produced just two runs in three games, collected only 11 hits, and struck out 29 times against a pitching staff that entered with a collective ERA over 4.60.

The numbers reflect the magnitude of the problem. Heading into Memorial Day, the Mets possess a collective OPS of just .642, the worst in all of Major League Baseball. Furthermore, their 206 runs scored place them among the least productive offenses in MLB, accompanied by a discreet .226 batting average.

The offensive crisis has multiple causes. The lineup still hasn’t found stability, and several important players are going through prolonged slumps. Names like Bo Bichette, Mark Vientos, and MJ Melendez have failed to deliver the expected production, while the injury absences of Francisco Lindor, Francisco Álvarez, and other key players have considerably reduced the roster’s depth.

The Mets urgently need changes in their lineup

Given this scenario, more and more voices are calling for a restructuring of the batting order. The proposed strategy involves placing youngsters Carson Benge and A.J. Ewing at the top of the lineup to leverage their ability to get on base and generate traffic before Juan Soto steps up to the plate.

Ewing has responded quickly upon his arrival to the Big Leagues, posting a .275 average and a .396 on-base percentage in his first opportunities. Benge, for his part, had a brilliant month of May before cooling off during the series against Miami.

Behind them, hope remains that Bichette will rediscover his best form. Although his current numbers are far from expected, his offensive talent remains undeniable, and the Mets urgently need him to become a decisive piece once again.

The ideal version of the Mets remains far from reality

The situation has also been aggravated by injuries. With the return of key figures like Francisco Lindor and Francisco Álvarez, along with an improvement in the performance of several starters, New York could field a much more competitive and balanced lineup.

On paper, the offensive potential is still there. However, as long as the results fail to show up and production remains among the worst in Major League Baseball, the organization will have to make major decisions to prevent a season that began with postseason aspirations from turning into one of the biggest disappointments of the 2026 campaign.
