The New York Mets continue working to build the most competitive roster possible for 2026, though so far they’ve suffered several key offseason losses that could leave them in a challenging position.
Even so, an MLB insider believes the Mets remain among the top contenders to land one of the best pitchers in Major League Baseball – provided his current team decides to make him available via trade.
Tarik Skubal to the Mets? Anything’s Possible
It was Jon Heyman of the New York Post who discussed this potential blockbuster MLB trade, naming the New York Mets as a possible landing spot for Cy Young Award winnerTarik Skubal if the Detroit Tigers decide to move him.
“The Mets are certainly interested. They need a top-of-the-rotation starter, and they do have prospect capital,” Heyman said when asked about a potential Skubal trade. “We do know David Stearns did trade for Christian Yelich… but he’s not someone who likes to trade elite prospects, particularly for a one-year rental.”
“Still, I’m going to put the Mets and the Los Angeles Dodgers as the most logical landing spots if the long-shot scenario plays out and Skubal is ultimately traded,” Heyman added.
Heyman does not believe Skubal will be moved this winter, especially with the ace set to reach MLB free agency after next season. Still, the Mets remain a realistic potential destination should circumstances change.
