The main reasons why Diego Pavia was not selected during the first round of the NFL Draft

The first round of the 2026 NFL Draft came and went without one of college football’s most recognizable names hearing his name called, something that fans noticed right away. It wasn’t a surprise for quarterback Diego Pavia, and now we are going to see how the NFL teams view his future.

Pavia became a national storyline as a culture-changing player at Vanderbilt Commodores, entered the draft as one of the more polarizing prospects in the class. His leadership, toughness and ability to win games made him a fan favorite, but those traits didn’t translate into first-round value in the eyes of NFL front offices.

Why? The biggest factor is physical profile. At the quarterback position, first-round picks are defined by elite measurable traits, which include size, arm, strength and top of the line passing ability. Diego doesn’t fully check those boxes. He’s considered undersized by NFL standards and lacks the type of arm talent teams usually prioritize early in the draft. That alone made it unlikely he would be selected alongside more prototypical prospects.

The reality was reflected Thursday night

Quarterbacks Fernando Mendoza and Ty Simpson were the only two at the position taken in the first round, going No. 1 overall to the Las Vegas Raiders and No. 13 to the Los Angeles Rams, respectively. Both players fit the traditional mold more closely, with size and arm strength that project more cleanly to the next level.

Pavia‘s game is built differently. He made his impact at Vanderbilt through confidence, mobility and the ability to deliver in key moments. His “clutch” reputation and leadership helped elevate a program that has historically struggled in the SEC, and that résumé carries weight.

However, projecting that style to the NFL is more complicated. Teams have to decide whether those intangibles can overcome limitations in physical tools. Most aren’t willing to take that risk during the first round, and that’s why his draft stock has always been viewed as a middle-round conversation rather than a top-32 lock.

What’s going to happen with Pavia?

There are still clear paths for Pavia at the next level. Quarterbacks with similar profiles have carved out roles as backups, developmental players or even spot starters in the right system. His mobility and competitive edge could make him appealing to teams looking for depth and versatility.

And then there’s the fact that the gap between being a college difference-maker and a first-round NFL quarterback is significant. Diego’s fall out of the first round doesn’t diminish what he accomplished at Vanderbilt. It does, however, highlight how strictly the league evaluates the position. Production and leadership matter, but physical traits and long-term projection often matter more, especially early in the draft.
