The Astros could prevent Jose Altuve from representing Venezuela in the 2026 World Baseball Classic

Wanting to do something and being able to do it are two very different things. Jose Altuve wants to play in the 2026 World Baseball Classic, and even declares himself ready to do so. In contrast, the Astros are not keen on their second baseman playing in the tournament with Venezuela and have therefore not given their approval for him to play. At first, Houston’s decision could be interpreted as a political matter due to the recent events of the US attack on Venezuelan territory to capture Nicolas Maduro. It has nothing to do with those events.

The franchise is evaluating whether to grant Altuve permission for purely sporting reasons. In turn, the player reaffirmed his intention to play in the World Baseball Classic (WBC) to continue the regularity he has had as a Venezuelan national team player in this competition.

If I get the opportunity, I would like to go. I’ve already signed all the papers saying I’m willing to play, just like I did in the last two Classics. It’s always an honour to represent my country; I played in the last one and the one before that. And I’m trying to do it this time as well, but I don’t know what goes on behind the scenes. It seems like this year is for me, so hopefully everything gets sorted out and I can go

José Altuve

The Astros have not forgotten the fractured thumb he suffered after being hit by a pitch in the last edition of the tournament. That injury had a negative impact on the team in the 2023 season; Altuve’s presence was fundamental on the field, but his absence forced moves that did not work in the attempt to reach the World Series. That’s why they don’t want to let him go.

The Astros’ greatest fear

One of the most powerful reasons for Houston to refuse to give Altuve permission to participate in the next World Baseball Classic is the trauma the organization is experiencing after the nightmare that was the 2025 season in terms of injuries.

The Astros set an MLB record for the most players on the injured list at the same time. They don’t want to go through that again, especially with Altuve and his thumb.

Astros’ plan for Altuve for the 2026 season

The player is expected to start in a new position with Houston. Since his debut in 2011, Altuve spent most of his career at second base until 2025. Last season he alternated between second base, left field and designated hitter.Manager Joe Espada has already indicated that the Venezuelan will serve as the team’s starting second baseman in 2026. There will be no rotation of positions with him, according to the scheme designed with the current roster.
