The arrival of Don Mattingly ignites the Phillies and rekindles the dream of signing Bo Bichette

The arrival of Don Mattingly to the Phillies coaching staff not only strengthens the bench, but has also ignited the imagination of the fans. On social media and forums, one name is being repeated more and more: Bo Bichette.

The stellar shortstop appears to be the great desire of the fans to raise the competitive level of the team for the next MLB season.

Don Mattingly raises new expectations in Philadelphia

The hiring of Don Mattingly as the new coach of the Phillies has been well received both inside and outside the clubhouse. His track record, leadership and recent experience in Toronto add value to an organization looking to make the leap in the National League.

Beyond the tactical impact, his arrival has had an immediate effect on the fans. Mattingly’s previous connection with Bo Bichette, whom he knows from his time with the Blue Jays, has fueled the possibility that Philadelphia could become an attractive destination for one of the best infielders available in free agency.

On social media, the fans’ sentiment is summed up in a phrase that has gone viral: “Great signing for the Phillies with their new bench coach. Now go get Bo Bichette.” The slogan reflects the desire to see the investment in the staff translated into a high-impact move on the roster.

Where will Bo Bichette play in 2026?

Bo Bichette hits the market after a solid 2025 season in which he hit .311 with 18 home runs, 94 RBIs and 44 doubles, establishing himself as one of the most complete hitters in MLB. His combination of power, contact and consistency makes him the most attractive infielder available.

Adding his offense to a lineup headed by Bryce Harper and Kyle Schwarber would make the Phillies one of the most feared attacks in baseball. It is no coincidence that high-profile teams such as the Yankees, Dodgers, Cubs and Red Sox are also closely following his situation.

The main obstacle for the Phillies is not financial, but structural, as with Trea Turner established as the shortstop and Bryson Stott at second base, the arrival of Bichette would involve significant adjustments. A position change or a trade involving pieces such as Stott or Alec Bohm would be part of the equation.

Although the presence of Mattingly does not guarantee anything, it does add points. Having a trusted figure on the coaching staff can sway decisions in such a competitive market. In addition, J.T. Realmuto’s contractual uncertainty opens a financial window that the Phillies could take advantage of.

Toronto, meanwhile, is exploring other options in the market, which keeps open the possibility that Bichette could wear a new uniform. In that scenario, Philadelphia appears as a serious alternative.
