Ten years of Alexander Povetkin’s results scrubbed as part of drugs punishment

Alexander Povetkin, the former heavyweight champion, is facing a significant blow to his boxing legacy after an investigation revealed additional doping violations.

The 45-year-old, who retired in 2021, had previously served a one-year suspension in 2016 after testing positive for the banned substance Ostarine. However, the latest findings from the International Testing Agency (ITA) uncover that Povetkin also tested positive for Ostarine in 2014, prompting a four-year ban and the disqualification of his results from 2014 until October 2024.

Doping violations uncovered in 2014

As part of an investigation into systematic doping in Russian sports, the ITA revealed that Povetkin’s positive test for Ostarine in 2014 had gone previously unreported. Ostarine, a substance known for its muscle-building and performance-enhancing effects, is banned by most sports organizations.

As a result of the violation, Povetkin’s results from October 25, 2014, until his provisional suspension in October 2024 have been revoked, including his performance in a significant fight on October 24/25, 2014.

Throughout his career, Povetkin fought some of the biggest names in the heavyweight division, including Anthony Joshua and Dillian Whyte.

However, the new revelations about his doping violations now cast doubt on his accomplishments. Povetkin’s professional record, which stands at 36-3-1 with 25 KOs, could be altered as a result of this decision. One of Povetkin’s most notable bouts was in 2018 when he faced Joshua for a chance to become the unified WBA, WBO, and IBF heavyweight champion but lost by a seventh-round knockout.

While Povetkin’s career faces major setbacks, Anthony Joshua’s future in the ring remains in the spotlight. Joshua is rumored to be preparing for a long-awaited clash with fellow British heavyweight Tyson Fury, despite Fury’s recent announcement of retirement.

The rivalry between Joshua and Fury has been a hot topic for years, with fans eagerly hoping for the two heavyweights to finally face off in a high-stakes bout. Though negotiations have stalled in the past, public support remains strong, and many believe the fight could still happen.

As Povetkin’s doping scandal unfolds, the boxing world remains focused on the future of Joshua and Fury, with hopes high for a showdown between the two British boxing stars.
