The Golden State is a sunny warm place that shines among the rest thanks to its joy. However, in basketball terminology, on Saturday night at State Farm Arena in Georgia, that joy was nowhere to be found.
Following a stinging 126-110 pianful loss to the Atlanta Hawks, head coach Steve Kerr cut a somber figure. For him, this was not just another mid-season stumble, as it felt like the heavy weight of an era finally pressing down. With the Warriors now sitting at 33-38, a season-high five games below .500, Kerr opted for raw honesty over tactical clichés.
A defense moving on tight ropes
The box score from Atlanta told a harrowing story of a defense that has lost its shape and effort. The Warriors “allowed” Dyson Daniels to dismantle them for 28 points on an efficient 12-of-17 shooting. For a team built on defensive rotations and intelligent play, watching an opponent slice through them with such ease was tough to digest.
The loss marked a third consecutive defeat and the eighth loss in their last ten games. Perhaps most concerning is the team’s struggles away from the Chase Center, as they now hold a dismal 14-23 record on the road, failing to find any semblance of identity outside of San Francisco.
“We’re all in a tough spot”
After the game, Kerr shared some thoughts with the media. He did not give out excuses, instead, he spoke to the human element of a locker room that is clearly missing.
“It’s a tough, tough time, for sure, for everybody. It’s human nature to, you know, to kind of get down, hang your head… I’m just trying to encourage the guys to keep competing… Stay positive, because reinforcements will come… We’re all in a tough spot right now
The tone of Kerr’s message was about someone trying to overcome a lack of answers. Currently seated 10th seed in the Western Conference, the Warriors are clinging to the final Play-In spot, feeling less like a contender and more like a team trying to keep its head above water in the middle of a storm.
