Stephen Jones says no one is interested in George Pickens

At a time when the Dallas Cowboys are navigating one of their most delicate contract situations, a single comment from Stephen Jones has added a new layer of intrigue to the future of George Pickens.

Speaking on 105.3 The Fan, Stephen Jones offered a blunt update that quickly made headlines across the league. “You hate to get into things like that but no, we have had no one call with interest in George Pickens,” he said.

On the surface, it was a straightforward answer. But in the context of ongoing negotiations and league wide speculation, it felt anything but routine.

George Pickens is coming off the best season of his career, emerging as a focal point in Dallas’ offense alongside quarterback Dak Prescott. The 25 year old posted 93 receptions for 1,429 yards and nine touchdowns, ranking among the league’s most productive receivers.

That level of production typically commands significant attention, particularly for a player entering his prime. Yet the Dallas Cowboys opted to place the non exclusive franchise tag on George Pickens, effectively securing him for 2026 while buying time to negotiate a long term deal.

The tag, worth approximately $27 million, also leaves the door open for other teams to explore a trade, albeit at a high cost. Any interested franchise would need to part with premium draft capital, making a deal complicated but not impossible.

The message behind the words

Stephen Jones‘ claim that there has been no trade interest raised eyebrows for a simple reason, it runs counter to how the NFL market usually operates.

Around the league, teams are constantly exploring ways to add elite talent, and a receiver with George Pickens‘ production profile would typically attract at least exploratory calls. That has led some to view Stephen Jones‘ statement less as a definitive update and more as a calculated move within the negotiation process.

The Dallas Cowboys have a history of leveraging the media during contract discussions, and the timing of the comment, with the July 15 extension deadline approaching, could be interpreted as an attempt to shape perception around George Pickens‘ value.

If no deal is reached by that date, George Pickens would play the season on the franchise tag, with further negotiations off the table until after the 2026 campaign.

Despite the uncertainty, there are signs of stability. George Pickens has continued to work out with Dak Prescott this offseason, maintaining the on field chemistry that drove his breakout year.

His own outlook appears unchanged. In a recent social media post, George Pickens signaled confidence heading into his fifth NFL season, saying, “Definitely year five gonna be another movie.”

While Stephen Jones downplayed trade interest, speculation has not disappeared. Teams like the Baltimore Ravens have been mentioned as potential fits, given their need for a top tier receiving option.

For now, however, the situation remains firmly in Dallas‘ hands. Owner Jerry Jones has built a reputation as one of the league’s toughest negotiators, and there is little indication the Dallas Cowboys feel pressure to rush into a deal.
