Stefon Diggs asked to join the Ravens to help Lamar Jackson: Time to come on home

The landscape of NFL free agency shifted dramatically on March 4, 2026, when the New England Patriots informed veteran wide receiver Stefon Diggs of his impending release. The news immediately sparked a frenzy among fanbases across the league.

But perhaps no pitch was more public than the one delivered by former Baltimore Ravens star Torrey Smith.

Taking to X shortly after the reports surfaced, Smith encouraged the Maryland native to return to his roots.

“Time to come on home. Either side of the Beltway works,” he said.

The “Beltway” reference points to the geographical corridor connecting the Baltimore Ravens and the Washington Commanders, both of whom could represent a logical next step for the 32-year-old wideout.

Diggs, who grew up in Gaithersburg and starred at the University of Maryland, has long been a subject of “homecoming” speculation.

For the Ravens specifically, the addition of a proven veteran could be the catalyst needed to stabilize an offense that fluctuated significantly during the 2025 season.

Can Diggs reignite Lamar Jackson’s MVP form?

Industry analysts suggest that providing Jackson with a second “X” receiver like Diggs could alleviate the double-teams frequently faced by Flowers and tight end Mark Andrews.

Despite the local clamor for a Baltimore move, other suitors are expected to emerge as the legal tampering window opens on March 9.

ESPN‘s Jeremy Fowler identified the New York Giants and Tennessee Titans as aggressive players in the veteran receiver market.

Both franchises are currently building around young quarterbacks-Jaxson Dart in New York and Cam Ward in Tennessee-and may view Diggs‘ “plug-and-play” reliability as essential for their development.

The Patriots‘ decision to move on from Diggs was primarily a financial one, as his salary cap hit was scheduled to jump to $26.5 million in 2026.

However, Diggs‘ productive 1,000-yard campaign in New England proves he still possesses the separation skills necessary to lead a receiving corps.
