Sports take over American TV in 2025 as politics slip down the rankings

The United States experienced no shortage of headline-making moments in 2025.Donald Trump returned to the White House, reshaping the political landscape. Across the Atlantic, Vatican City made history with the election of its first American-born Pope. These were the kinds of stories that normally define a year.

Yet when Americans turned on their televisions, the data shows their attention was focused somewhere else entirely. Night after night, live sports captured the country’s attention in a way no speech, ceremony, or awards show could match. The ratings make that reality impossible to ignore.

According to figures published by Sports Business Journal, 96 of the 100 most-watched TV broadcasts of 2025 were sporting events. That total increased from 87 the year before and tied the all-time record set in 2023. Sports did not just perform well. They completely dominated the television landscape.

Football tightened its grip on American TV

Football sat at the center of it all. Of those 96 sports broadcasts, an estimated 92 came from football games, split between college football and the NFL. The NFL alone accounted for roughly 84 of the top 100 telecasts, driven by the final stretch of the 2024 season and the opening months of the 2025 campaign.

The year’s biggest audience arrived in February. The Super Bowl showdown between the Philadelphia Eagles and the Kansas City Chiefs drew an estimated 127.7 million U.S. viewers, according to Nielsen figures. Played in New Orleans, Super Bowl LIX became the most-watched season finale in American television history, outpacing everything else on the calendar.

College football also benefited from change. The expanded 12-team College Football Playoff is projected to land eight broadcasts in the top 100, its highest total ever.Baseball joined the party too, with Games 6 and 7 of a tense World Series between the Los Angeles Dodgers and Toronto Blue Jays drawing massive audiences.

Beyond football and baseball, familiar staples returned. The Kentucky Derby and the men’s March Madness championship both secured places among the most-watched broadcasts of the year.

Only four non-sporting events cracked the list. Trump’s inauguration, his address to a joint session of Congress, the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade, and the Oscars. Notably absent were streaming-only events, including Netflix boxing matches such as Anthony Joshua’s bout with Jake Paul. For traditional television, live sports remained the unrivaled draw in 2025.
