Ohtani is currently one of the most beloved players by MLB fans and even more so by fans in his native Japan, which is why it is not surprising to know that there are people willing to shell out an impressive amount to get one of the jerseys he wore during the 2023 World Baseball Classic. Even so, the final figure is a number never seen before in this type of auction, setting a new record.

Shohei Ohtani sets new auction record

The garment, worn during a key match in the tournament, sold for more than $1.5 million, setting a new record.

The item was auctioned through MLB Auctions, making it the most valuable sports item in recent years

These kinds of figures are not common, even in a sport with as much tradition as baseball. The jersey confirms what has been talked about for some time, Ohtani already has a place in history, but he is destined to become one of the greatest of all time.

The performance that increased his value

The value of the jersey is no coincidence. It was used in a memorable game between Japan and Chinese Taipei, where Ohtani put in a dominant performance.

During that game, the Japanese player hit a grand slam in the second inning, igniting the fans at the Tokyo Dome. He also drove in five runs in a single inning, an unprecedented feat in the history of the tournament.

His offensive line that night was equally impressive: three hits in four at-bats, including a double and an RBI single. It was, in short, a performance that encapsulates everything Ohtani stands for as a player.

Ohtani, more than a player, a global phenomenon

Talking about Ohtani is to refer to a unique athlete. His ability to excel as both a hitter and a pitcher places him in a special category within modern baseball.

But his influence goes beyond sporting performance. His image, charisma and consistency have made him a global icon, capable of attracting both traditional fans and new audiences. The auction of this jersey is proof of this

Every participation of the Japanese in international events generates expectation, and this year was no exception. Despite being eliminated early, the Japanese team knows that it has in Ohtani one of the most important athletes of the moment.
