Not just Aaron Rodgers: Mike McCarthy could see 14 more players leave the Steelers

The Pittsburgh Steelers face a precarious offseason as quarterback Aaron Rodgers remains unsigned, leaving a pivotal decision pending, while head coach Mike McCarthy risks losing 14 additional free agents who could destabilize the roster.

Quarterbacks Aaron Rodgers and Skylar Thompson remain unsigned, and the Steelers‘ safeties Chuck Clark, Kyle Dugger, and Jabrill Peppers are also without contracts, raising concerns about the stability and experience of their defensive backfield moving forward.

The defensive line has four free agents-Daniel Ekuale, Isaiahh Loudermilk, Dean Lowry, and Jacob Slade-whose departures could weaken interior rotation, limit pass rush options, and force McCarthy to make difficult decisions about replacements in free agency or the 2026 draft.

Outside linebacker Jeremiah Moon is another unsigned veteran, leaving a key position exposed in both coverage and edge-rush situations, while wide receivers Scotty Miller and Marquez Valdes-Scantling remain available, which could disrupt depth and consistency in the passing attack.

Tight end Donald Parham has yet to re-sign, and offensive linemen Andrus Peat and Max Scharping are still unsigned, presenting challenges to maintaining cohesion up front, particularly for protecting the quarterback and supporting the run game under a new offensive scheme.

Could Steelers walk away from Aaron Rodgers in 2026 NFL Draft?

Rodgers enjoyed a productive first season, throwing for 3,322 yards, completing 65.7% of his passes with 24 touchdowns and seven interceptions, while leading Pittsburgh to the postseason, but his future remains unresolved, leaving uncertainty at the league’s most important position.

NFL.com’s Chad Reuter predicts the Steelers may draft Miami quarterback Carson Beck in the third round of 2026, whose methodical, rhythm-based style contrasts Rodgers‘ improvisational tendencies.

Beck may offer long-term stability while compared to the 42-year-old Rodgers, who is expected to retire in coming seasons, whilst creating a quarterback battle between the NFL Draft prospect and Will Howard, into his second year.

If Rodgers returns, Beck could develop gradually without pressure, adjusting to NFL speed and system nuances, providing a bridge for the Steelers while giving McCarthy time to plan, but if Rodgers retires, Beck could step in immediately as a controlled and efficient starter.

Rodgers has given mixed signals about his future, attending a charity event but making no commitment to the team.

“Obviously that would be a draw if I decided we’d go down that path. But again, it takes two to tango, and we’ll see what happens as we get into free agency and everything,” Rodgers said, hinting the Steelers have to meet him halfway.

Until Rodgers makes a decision, McCarthy and Omar Khan, general manager, must navigate a complex offseason, balancing 14 other unsigned players, salary cap space, draft strategy, and team continuity, highlighting that Pittsburgh‘s quarterback uncertainty is only part of a wider roster challenge.
