Shedeur Sanders brought crashing back to earth by Rex Ryan after first Browns start: ‘Are you kidding me?’

Shedeur Sanders‘ promising first start for the Cleveland Browns didn’t contain many rookie mistakes on the field. But away from it, his comments struck a nerve with former NFL head coach and current analyst Rex Ryan in a way that could impact his trajectory.

After leading Cleveland to a 24-10 victory over the Las Vegas Raiders, Sanders‘ postgame tone did not sit well with Ryan, who offered pointed advice on his behavior and leadership.

The win seemed to mark a turning point for the rookie quarterback, who completed 11 of 20 passes for 209 yards, one touchdown and one interception while also benefiting from a defense that recorded 10 sacks.

With momentum seemingly building, Sanders said, “a lot of people want to see me fail, and that ain’t going to happen.”

Yet less than 24 hours later, Rex Ryan seized on that same quote, arguing it exposed a lack of teamfirst mentality.

“Every time you win a game … please use ‘us’ and ‘we,'” Ryan said. “And anytime you lose, it’s ‘me’ and ‘I.’ And watch your popularity in the locker room and around the country will go [up].

“First thing you should have said is ‘we had 10 sacks on the quarterback’ Are you kidding me? Myles Garrett is the man.'”

Sanders lacking vocal leadership skills

Ryan‘s public critique revealed a deeper concern that Sanders, despite showing genuine talent, may not yet project the leadership required to be a starting NFL quarterback.

Ryan‘s comments follow a string of criticism earlier in the season. In September, he suggested he believed that Sanders wasn’t working hard enough to leapfrog rival Dillon Gabriel on the depth chart.

More recently, he pointed out that some players on Cleveland‘s roster appeared unenthused when Sanders made his initial relief appearance against the Baltimore Ravens, a game in which the rookie logged just 4-of-16 passing for 47 yards and an interception.

Ryan did tip his hat to Sanders‘ deepball accuracy, noting that he completed three passes of over 35 yards when the rest of Cleveland‘s roster had just one all season.

But the broader tone was one of accountability. Ryan made clear that talent alone isn’t enough, and that the rookie must embrace maturing off the field.

For the Browns, the moment carries stakes. With the quarterback carousel still unsettled and the playoff hopes narrow, the organization needs a clear leader.

Kevin Stefanski and the coaching staff now face the challenge of managing Sanders‘ growth while addressing public perception and team culture.

Shedeur Shanders ignores negativity

The rookie’s response has been measured. Before Ryan‘s criticism, Sanders told reporters: “We not on no negativity from now on … I’m just here to be positive, and I don’t speak on anything negative.

“That’s the new way, that’s what we going forward with. Anything negative, we not talking about it, we not speaking on it.”

Still, the timing is notable. Coming right after a highprofile win, the public rebuke by Ryan threatens to overshadow the onfield success.

Analysts say the pivotal question now is whether Sanders can translate the performance into consistent leadership in a locker room that demands cohesion and respect.

In the NFL, rookie quarterbacks are expected to learn quickly, but also to lead. For Shedeur Sanders, the journey from potential starting quarterback to proven leader has just begun.
