Shakur Stevenson hits back at Gervonta Davis: “He needs me as much as I need him”

The 2025 boxing schedule has many attractive fights in store that could materialize to the delight of fans, one of the most anticipated is Shakur ‘Sugar’ Stevenson against Gervonta ‘Tank’ Davis, which has been postponed despite the fact that it seemed that it was already tied up with Matchroom Boxing promoter Eddie Hearn.

While Tank Davis has plans to retire in 2025 after three fights, the next one is already in the works against Lamont Roach Jr. on March 1 in Brooklyn, so he will have to make room for two rivals and one of them could be Sugar Stevenson, who also has a fight against Floyd Schofield Jr.

Davis’ co-trainer Kenny Ellis accused Stevenson of cowardice, pointing out that even if he wins his next fight “he’s going to hurt his hands. Even if his hand is not hurt, it’s going to hurt,” Ellis told Mill City Boxing and added: “That’s what you do when you’re trying to buy time.”

In a recount of the last chapters of the novel by Stevenson and Davis, Essentially Sports highlighted that Sugar dismisses fear of facing Tank, because it is about the legacy of either one.

“The fight between ‘Tank’ and me is the one that will define our legacy. A lot of people try to make it look like I need him. But honestly, he needs me as much as I need him,” Stevenson told Eze Talks Sports, adding: “There will be a lot of big fights, but I have to focus on the task at hand. Then we can talk about the next fighter and the ones that will come after.”

Eddie Hearn is not giving up, and after the scheduled fight between Sugar and Floyd Schofield, which will take place on February 22 in Riyadh, he hopes that Stevenson can face two more opponents before the long-awaited fight with Gervonta.

“The plan for Shakur Stevenson is Floyd Schofield, Williams Zepeda, and Gervonta Davis. That’s in 2025… that fight (against Gervonta) will be one of the biggest in the world.”
