Scottie Scheffler’s rocky Ryder Cup start puts Tiger Woods’ struggles into perspective

Facing the immense pressure of representing one’s country in golf’s premier team event can be overwhelming. For Scottie Scheffler, the beginning of this Ryder Cup has been particularly challenging.

Following Saturday’s foursomes defeat, Scheffler made history as the first-ever world No. 1 to lose his opening three Ryder Cup matches.

His struggles began Friday morning, when he teamed up with Russell Henley and was defeated by Europe’s Ludvig Aberg and Matt Fitzpatrick with a 5 & 3 score.

Later that day, paired with JJ Spaun, Scheffler again fell short, losing 3 & 2 to European players Jon Rahm and Sepp Straka.

These consecutive losses have added to a series of unwanted marks on his Ryder Cup record.

When viewed alongside Tiger Woods‘ performance at the Ryder Cup, Scheffler‘s difficulties highlight just how tough the competition can be.

Although Woods boasts 15 major championship wins, his Ryder Cup record was less impressive: 13 wins, 21 losses, and 3 halves, contributing to only one victorious U.S. team across eight appearances.

After Scheffler and Henley narrowly lost to Robert MacIntyre and Viktor Hovland, it’s possible that Scheffler could equal or even exceed some of Woods’ Ryder Cup struggles.

At the time of writing on Saturday afternoon, Team USA trails Team Europe 8.5 to 3.5 while playing on European soil, facing an uphill battle to regain momentum.
